So High - SFC native excited about launch of musical career
Posted: Jan 3, 2007
|
She's Camille Smith in St. Francis County and her hometown of Palestine. In the musical recording world, she's Shauna C - The C stands for Camille. Either way, she's extremely excited about releasing her first compact disc, "Simply Me."
The singer-songwriter penned all the urban rhythm and blues tunes featured on her release, headed by the track "So High."
The daughter of Elmer Jr. and Ernestine Smith - her mom is her proud business manager - Camille has been a writer and singer for nearly all of her 24 years. Her mom started Camille's musical instruction at the tender age of four, when she started playing the piano and singing, Ernestine recalled with a smile. Her first performance at her church, Elcannon Missionary Baptist Church in Palestine, was a rendition of "Praise God for He is Worthy to be Praised."
"She played the piano and cried through that," her mother remembered. "I had to stand between her and the audience because she was so shy."
Young Camille grew out of that shy stage but not out of her love for music and performing. She sang in the choir at Palestine-Wheatley High School and was part of an R&B group she formed with some high school friends before graduating in 2000. She and her friends wrote and performed R&B, jazz, and gospel together.
From high school graduation to 2004 Smith continued with her songwriting, which she had started back at the age of 15. Finally, in 2004 she started recording her just-released CD, "Simply Me."
"I was working hard on the lyrics," Smith said with a big, warm smile.
Much of her music is produced by her cousin Kevin Cottrell, who also owns Joker Entertainment. She likes his funky beats and sometimes gets inspiration for a new song by listening to his music.
It took a couple of years to get the entire cd recorded.
"It took some time between work and other things," Smith explained. The recording was done at Joker Entertainment and Doghouse Recording Studio, both located in Little Rock where Smith now lives.
It took about four hours to record the CD's first track, "So High."
"It takes about three to four hours to record one song," Smith pointed out.
Smith recorded all the background vocals herself, also a lengthy process.
Finally the exhausting recording work was finished.
"I was just so happy," she said brightly. "Words just can't express." The CD was released in November. The feature track "So High," is accompanied by several others, including "Here in My Heart," a tribute to Smith's deceased grandparents, Aaron and Vertory Spearmon and Elmer " Papa Elmer" Smith Sr. Another of her songs, "Dreaming" features rap artist ES III, who is Smith's brother Elmer "Chip" Smith III.
Clips of her songs and performances can be heard and seen on her website, www.shaunac.com and her My Space page, http://www.myspace.com/shaunacshaunac.
The two-year process of recording was a big learning experience for Smith. "I had a lot to learn in that waiting period," she said. Her business manager-mom did too.
There are alot of behind- the- scenes happenings in the music business- for instance, a musical artist needs an entertainment lawyer that neither were originally aware of. They are currently doing all the research and marketing work for themselves. "This is all new to us," her mother admitted, although it has been a joy to promote her daughter's lifelong goal. All the hard work seems worth it with the release of her first collection of songs.
The release of her CD was by no means the beginning of Smith's publicity for her singing and songwriting. " Dreaming" has been played on several radio stations in Arkansas and Memphis. " So High" has been playing in area night spots as well. Smith performed "One Last Cry" live in Nashville this past summer. She's appeared on a Little Rock TV station and has hopes for live appearances at Riverfest and other festivals in the area.
She's excited about all these developments with her work as she continues to market her new release. She's planning a release party in the Forrest City area and is also working to schedule live performances in St. Francis County. She's excited about the prospect of playing live before family and friends, including her grandmother Geraldine "Mama G" Smith of Palestine.
Her CD is available now from her Web site and songs can also be downloaded from iTunes. Smith is proud that her songs are available in that format, and adds that the independent music agency Taxi has her songs available for any record label interested in her work. She knows there has been at least one request for her work from a record company in New York.
She wants her music to be available from mass merchandise and is working toward that goal along with the prospect of going on tour.
Smith is channelling her optimism over the release of her first CD into what will hopefully turn into a long-term career for her. A year from now, she'd like to be a full-time musical artist.
"I'm going to keep working hard at it," she said with a happy smile. "This is my dream."

First and foremost, I thank the Great I Am, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for everything that he's done because without him nothing is possible, but with him I can do all things. Secondly, I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me and believing in my dream, in what I love and that's my music. I love you so much and I am so grateful to have a wonderful family like you. Momma (manager) and Daddy, I Love You! Words alone can't express how much I love and appreciate you. I'm glad to have you both in my life. I also want to thank the producers and engineers that worked with me on this album, Brandon Reeves, K.E.V. Kevin Cottrell of Joker Entertainment, Malaki Michael Sanders, and Reggie of Doghouse Recording Studio, you have an awesome gift. To ESIII and Keddy Mac, a couple of the hottest rappers in The Rock (Little Rock, AR), thank you guys so much for being a part of this album, your lyrics always amaze me. Looking forward to working with you soon, KEEP IT TIGHT. Last but not least, my fans, you are awesome and I thank you so much for supporting me, my album, my appearances etc. So a big THANKS to you!!!
